Immich

Open source · OSI-approvedStatus: unknown

Self-hosted photo and video backup for your own server

Immich replaces a cloud photo service with software that runs on hardware you own. Mobile apps for iOS and Android back up new photos and videos in the background, so the library on your server stays current without you thinking about it.

What sets it apart from older self-hosted gallery software is that it does not feel like a compromise. The timeline scrolls smoothly through tens of thousands of items, search understands natural language, and faces are grouped automatically by an on-device model rather than by a cloud API.

Because everything stays on your hardware there is no storage cap, no subscription, and no third party holding your family photographs. The tradeoff is that backups, disk health, and upgrades become your responsibility.

Decisive facts

  • Automatic background backup from iOS and Android
  • Face recognition and natural language search running locally
  • Map view for geotagged media and shared albums for family
  • RAW support and duplicate detection for larger libraries
  • Multi-user accounts with partner sharing

Ente

End-to-end encrypted photo storage across devices

Ente stores photos and videos encrypted on the client, so the server holds ciphertext it cannot read. Sync, albums, and sharing all work on top of that constraint rather than around it.

Screen recorder with editing and instant shareable links

LicenseAGPL-3.0

Cap records screen and camera, then gives you an editor with backgrounds, automatic zooms, and cursor smoothing before you share a link. It is built in Rust on Tauri, so the binary is small and recording does not tax the machine it is recording.

Syncthing synchronises folders directly between devices with no server in the middle. There is no account, no storage quota, and no third party holding the data, because the data never leaves the set of machines you nominate.

RustDesk

Remote desktop you can point at your own relay server

LicenseAGPL-3.0

RustDesk is remote desktop software where the relay server is a binary you can run yourself. That is the whole argument: the same convenience as the commercial tools, without your screen sessions transiting a vendor's infrastructure.
