Immich replaces a cloud photo service with software that runs on hardware you own. Mobile apps for iOS and Android back up new photos and videos in the background, so the library on your server stays current without you thinking about it.
Cloud photo library with automatic backup and search

Google Photos backs up everything a phone takes and then makes it findable. Search understands objects, places, and people without any tagging, and the timeline handles libraries in the hundreds of thousands without stalling.
Asynchronous screen and camera recording shared by link

Loom's contribution was the workflow, not the recording. Stop the recording and the link is already on your clipboard, which is what made replacing a meeting with a three minute video actually happen.
OpenCut is a timeline video editor that installs nothing and uploads nothing. Media stays in the browser, processing happens locally through WebCodecs, and there is no account step before you can cut a clip.
CapCut is free, capable, and shaped entirely around vertical video for social platforms. Auto captions, trend templates, and one-tap effects remove most of the craft barrier to publishing.
Screen recording with automatic zooms and polished motion
CompanyScreen Studio
Since2022
PricingPaid
Screen Studio produces product demos that look edited without anyone editing them. Cursor movement is smoothed, clicks trigger zooms, and the resulting motion reads as deliberate rather than as somebody's screen recording.
Photo library synced through iCloud across Apple devices
CompanyApple
Since2015

Apple Photos does most of its analysis on the device rather than in the cloud, so face grouping and object search work without the library being readable by the vendor. Sync happens through iCloud, and the library is a first party part of the operating system rather than an app you install.
Ente stores photos and videos encrypted on the client, so the server holds ciphertext it cannot read. Sync, albums, and sharing all work on top of that constraint rather than around it.

Cap records screen and camera, then gives you an editor with backgrounds, automatic zooms, and cursor smoothing before you share a link. It is built in Rust on Tauri, so the binary is small and recording does not tax the machine it is recording.
